Rethinking your busywork

I understand how tempting it can be to keep busywork on our plates.

Well, we call it busywork, but it’s often just work we’ve been doing for so long that we’ve forgotten to question why it’s still on our plates.

By rethinking busywork, we can free up our time for strategic decisions and give our employees the chance to grow.

I write about the issues with holding on to busywork, how it might be a challenge for someone else to take on, and the benefits of delegation.

The Problem with Holding On

When I first stepped into leadership, I struggled to let go of certain tasks. I’d think, “It’ll be faster if I do it myself,” or, “What if they mess it up?”

Sound familiar?

It’s a trap many leaders fall into. We underestimate the cost of holding on.

What’s the cost?

  • Overwork.
  • Missed opportunities.
  • The unintentional message we send to our teams: “I don’t trust you with this.”

That’s not leadership. It’s micromanagement in disguise.

If we want to lead effectively, we need to ask ourselves: Are we focusing on the tasks only…
